Products - 751
A Product is a placeholder for cost items such as equipment, software, and more.
Products do not physically exist in the world, but Assets and Stockroom Products within the Product do.
Product data consists primarily of financial and manufacturer details though they can also include info on: Assets, Suppliers, Rentals, Service Requests, Rate Schedules, and more.

Product Types
Product Types help users find and organize Products.
Product Types help reduce the length of scrollable lists by grouping Products together. Products can be grouped by their usage (audio, video, safety), type (cameras, lenses, cables), or any logical grouping.
Product Type Classes
Product Type Classes help track Depreciation Schedule, Useful Life, IT Class, and are categorized as Hardware, Software, and/or Medium.
Product Types can be grouped in a Product Type Class. Classes can be configured with a Depreciation Schedule and Useful Life that will apply when Assets are linked to the Product of a Product Type.
Best Practices
- There should be a consensus amongst heavy VimBiz Product users on how Products are categorized.
- Product Type names should contain a limited amount of detail describing the product line.
- When used for inventory management only, a maximum of 100 to 200 unique Product Types is recommended.
- The first level of Product Type groups should be high-level categories such as: Audio, Camera, Computers, Lights, Software, etc.
- Product Types should be organized in parent / child structured groups. Example:
- Cameras & Peripherals
- Jibs (Cranes)
- Lens
- Lens - Telephoto
- Lens - Wide Angle
- Cameras & Peripherals
- When selecting a Product Type the first level should not be selected.
Products have unique usage based on the module or form they are used in.
Rental Products
Rental Products behave similarly to Assets, they can be booked, checked out, and checked in.
When a Product type is booked, the Asset of the Product (that is part of the booked Product Type) resolves the Product in VimBiz.
Catalogue Products
Catalogue Products are Products linked to barcoded Assets. They contain data such as Manufacturer, Type, Model, and financial information. They are linked to one or several barcoded Assets as shown below.
Stockroom Products are Products added to a Stockroom bin as non-barcoded inventory products. These products are non-barcoded Rental Items.
For Rentals, Stockroom Products can be configured either as rentable or as non-rentable (consumable).
For Service Requests, Stockroom Products are consumables.
Non-inventoried Products
Products can be found in the Catalogue for the following modules.
• Purchasing and Receiving: Products can be added to a Product Request.
• Rentals: Non-inventoried Products can be added to a Rental.
• Scheduling: Non-inventoried Products can be linked to a Production Project for cost tracking purposes.
