2020 was a difficult year for businesses and individuals around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic challenged us to ensure the safety of our employees while maintaining the same quality services to our loyal customers.
Early in the pandemic, every employee was setup to be fully operational to work and collaborate from home or at the office. By using technologies such as VPN over multi-ISP failover fiber internet connections, Microsoft Teams, and our own VimBiz technology, we leveraged technology to allow every employee to communicate and collaborate effectively no matter where they are physically.
With onsite visits for meetings, implementations, and training on pause until we can ensure the safety of our employees, we continue to work diligently to provide the same high quality customer support and services remotely.
Our technical team adapted quickly to the “new normal” by remaining as productive as ever, developing our new Business Requirements module and implementing over 160 VimBiz enhancements during the past 12 months.
We would like to thank our loyal customers for continuing to work closely with us in 2020 and look forward to working with you in 2021 and beyond!
NRK of Norway has selected the VimBiz cloud-based solution to optimize their resource planning and scheduling processes.
After many years of successful implementations in North America, South America, and several European countries, VimBiz has been selected again as the best solution to optimize the complex planning and scheduling processes of a public broadcaster. The NRK of Norway preferred VimBiz after managing a highly competitive process with multiple international suppliers, which included a meticulous evaluation methodology through a public tender process.
“The Broadcasting industry has been managing their production planning and resource scheduling for technical resources and professional staff using multiple antiquated software that are not integrated as one solution.” shared Tom Levesque, Business Development Manager at Vimsoft. “NRK’s main objective was to find the market-leading solution that offers an end-to-end solution to their complex operation. The solution also needed to be cloud-based and mobile-accessible, using popular smartphone devices. VimBiz met all these criteria, and offered much more.”
“The long list of business requirements of the NRK were highly detailed and very familiar to the VimBiz experts” proudly reported Mitch Manuel, Vimsoft President and CEO. “VimBiz was designed exclusively for the broadcasting industry and the workflows and processes have been further optimized over the years to meet the intricate requirements of the media production industry.”
The VimBiz Scheduling and Timecards solution has now been selected through competitive public tenders by SVT in Sweden, DR in Denmark, SRG SSR in Switzerland, and NRK in Norway. The European media industry has done its due diligence and the result is unanimous:; VimBiz is the leading solution to manage the planning and scheduling of media productions for public broadcasters.”

More and more, VimBiz is recognized as the standard solution to drive efficiency and to manage the operational costs for large media production corporations.
“This project is another important operation milestone, as VimBiz will be used simultaneously in four different languages to share production resources from four distinct business units,” stated Tom Levesque, Business Development Manager. "Our customers have very complex operations, and VimBiz was designed to convert intricate production requirements to normal workflows and controllable processes."
“We were glad to read up on the details of the business requirements for this RFP,” explained Paul Manuel, VimBiz Product Manager. "We believe VimBiz to be the only resource management solution in the Media industry designed to solve these complex media production projects. The requirement for a real-time interface with SAP was a familiar request as interfacing with human resource and financial systems such as SAP is part of our standard interfacing process."

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) will start the 2015 school year with a brand new VimBiz installation that will cover all their rental needs. After seeing an extensive demo at NAB 2015, the SVA team was convinced that VimBiz was the right solution for their operation thanks to its intuitive rental and asset management solutions.
“SVA is one of two visual art schools that use VimBiz. When SVA heard about Sheridan College in Ontario using VimBiz for rentals, they could immediately relate. This is definitely a start to what can become a standard solution for visual art schools from all over looking to rent and track equipment to their students,” said Business Development Manager, Tom Levesque.
The entire Vimsoft team welcomes The School of Visual arts to its ever growing list of satisfied clients.

VimBiz has done it again – the best Broadcast Resource Management solution suite has been preferred to and has successfully replaced a competitor’s product. This time, VimBiz Discrepancy Reporting has been chosen for a nationwide implementation at NBC Universal.
“Various factors convinced NBC Universal’s decision makers that VimBiz was the right choice for their needs,” said Business Development Manager Tom Levesque. “A true integration with the Service module, for when a distribution discrepancy is caused by an equipment failure, along with the flexible reporting capabilities of VimBiz, contributed to the decision of replacing the incumbent solution with VimBiz. Through this great partnership, the Vimsoft team enhanced the VimBiz Discrepancy Reporting module, and implemented a new Rule-Based E-Mail Distribution system. NBC Universal managers get notified of distribution discrepancies, when they have to. This rule-based engine will revolutionize how emails are sent through the VimBiz suite,” gleamed Levesque.

VimBiz continues to expand in North America with its ability to integrate engineering workflows with operational workflows in one solution. VimBiz was also selected for its capability to manage multiple networks in multiple regions: a must requirement for this major network broadcaster.
“Our client’s objective is to set up a state of the art facility that uses cutting edge technology such as VimBiz on Windows 8.1 tablet PCs with RFID capabilities. The Vimsoft team is very pleased to work with clients that focus on streamlining their operations while modernizing current technical installations”, explained Tom Levesque, Vimsoft’s Business Development Manager.
VimBiz continues its expansion in South America and in Europe and is recognized as the best solution for multiple business applications and for its adaptability to new industry technologies.
Vimsoft was selected again as the best provider of a Planning and Scheduling System to manage the Media Production Resources of a major TV and Radio Network in Europe.
Following an extensive RFP selection process, VimBiz was judged to be the best technology on the market today. The Vimsoft Team continues to be excited about the future expansion of its flagship solution VimBiz in more European countries.
"The benefits of an integrated solution were important factors to the client's future operations," observed Tom Levesque, Vimsoft Business Development Manager. "VimBiz addresses comprehensive Resource Scheduling needs, with the addition of the powerful VimBiz Rentals operations."
The European Broadcasting Industry is recognizing the "Lean Six Sigma" benefits of the VimBiz solution with multiple business applications in one solution.
For Sveriges Television AB (SVT) it was a logical expansion of their existing VimBiz Enterprise Service Management solution to address ITSM workflows. The IT Helpdesk, Incident Reporting, and Change Management tools are all there in the VimBiz Service solution. Thorough User Acceptance Testing resulted in a recent rollout of this powerful area within VimBiz Service.
“SVT’s IT Department serves thousands of users across its vast network and the Helpdesk handles 180 IT calls and reports every day,” observed Vimsoft Business Development Manager Tom Levesque. “With this volume SVT needed an enterprise-scale IT Service Management solution,” continued Levesque, “and they knew they had one in the VimBiz Enterprise Service Management solution. SVT provides a great example of a customer solving an area of initial pain, in this case Scheduling and Timecards, and then continuing to leverage VimBiz benefits through subsequent implementation of integrated VimBiz solutions. SVT now has VimBiz Scheduling, Timecards, Assets, Rentals, Service, and Stockrooms solutions. ITSM has now been implemented and Discrepancy Reporting is next. These methodical rollouts result in a stellar model of workflow efficiency.”
Vimsoft had a fantastic response to the VimBiz suite this year at Europe’s largest broadcasting convention, IBC2013 in Amsterdam. At the Vimsoft booth in Hall 9 visitors unfamiliar with VimBiz witnessed something not seen before in the broadcasting and media production industry—an elegant and comprehensive software suite that addresses Resource Scheduling as well as Rentals and Engineering workflows. Vimsoft calls this ‘True Integration’ and the ability to manage all these related workflows in a single database was a revelation for many.
“People came looking for a Scheduling solution or a Rentals solution,” noted Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe, “and quickly realized this VimBiz EVO suite offers far more. VimBiz is built on a solid Engineering foundation that facilitates the industry’s most powerful Operations solutions for Rentals and Resource Scheduling. People really ‘got it’ and recognized the visibility, collaboration, and efficiency benefits provided by True Integration.”
Industry institution Deluxe provides world-class post-production and other entertainment services to the world’s top motion-picture groups. To deliver these services Deluxe relies on a staggering amount of technical equipment for which the Engineering group has responsibility. Recognizing the vast capabilities of VimBiz, Deluxe management chose to implement an Engineering-focused package that includes Asset Management, Service Workflow, and Stockroom Management.
“Many people recognize the name Deluxe from the film credits of many of their favorite movies,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President and film buff Paul Manuel. “We’re very proud to add Deluxe to our list of marquee customers,” added Manuel, “and we love the association between a world-class entertainment institution managing critical engineering workflows and a best-of-breed software suite from a company so passionate about and dedicated to the broadcasting and media production industry.”
Vimsoft will feature the latest VimBiz EVO solution suite in stand 9.A02 at IBC2013 this September in Amsterdam. The EVO version has been referred to as “the ultimate VimBiz” and promises to change the expectation level for integration of Resource Scheduling, Rentals, and Engineering workflows.
“VimBiz EVO sets a new standard in Broadcast Resource Management power and refinement,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “EVO is the product of a solid VimBiz foundation and valuable customer feedback,” continued DeWolfe, “This latest evolution offers even tighter integration between solutions, more personalization options, and an even more pleasing, consistent, and intuitive feel. Our customers love VimBiz for its user-friendliness. This important element has been taken to a new level with VimBiz EVO. We invite IBC attendees to visit Vimsoft’s booth to see VimBiz EVO in action.”
As Vimsoft closes the books on another successful fiscal year company management is pleased to announce that, once again, Vimsoft has had its best year ever.
“This has become a trend,” noted a beaming Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft, “one we are very proud to continue. Sales have doubled again over the past two years, indicating that broadcasting and media companies focused on increasing efficiency and decreasing costs are willing to invest in the latest technology that supports those objectives. For existing clients accustomed to reaping VimBiz benefits, the business case for increased commitments was already very strong. For new customers the commitment is fresh, and we are very motivated to foster their success by enabling better decisions. The results are better bottom lines for everyone, including Vimsoft. Our team sends a hearty and sincere thank-you to our existing customers and those new to Vimsoft and VimBiz. You make us great.”
The Director of Engineering at Washington, DC-area PBS broadcaster WETA knows the key to efficient management of asset and service workflows is visibility. Accordingly, WETA recently purchased a popular Vimsoft barcode solution, and complemented the company’s service workflows with a VimMail e-mail utility that enables even non-VimBiz users to easily track the progress of Service Requests.
“As a Broadcast Engineer myself,” commented Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “I can relate to the WETA Engineering team’s desire to work more collaboratively and efficiently. I applaud their efforts to not only leverage VimBiz technology to further organize their own workflows, but to implement VimBiz tools that increase accessibility and visibility for the organization they support.”
Swedish national public broadcaster SVT is a shining example of a methodical VimBiz implementation resulting in tremendous efficiencies and cost-savings. The initial focus was VimBiz Scheduling and Timecards to facilitate planning and scheduling of all production resources and capture all employee working times and claim codes. Recognizing that Resource Scheduling involves technical gear that requires service and may be associated with rental contracts, SVT next implemented VimBiz Rentals and VimBiz Engineering solutions, the latter focused on management of technical assets and service workflow. The next logical step has now been taken with the acquisition of VimBiz Enterprise Stockroom Management.
“Sometimes a production project requires non-barcoded items that nevertheless should be tracked,” noted Vimsoft Development Team Leader Marc Gallant, “and often a rental involves parts or consumables that have real cost implications. These situations highlight the value of effectively managing stockrooms. In addition, a core benefit of the Stockrooms solution is the tight integration with service workflow. When equipment breaks, parts are needed. These parts are sourced in stockrooms, a process that necessitates replenishment. With VimBiz Enterprise Stockroom Management all these related activities are highly integrated and highly visible, so the right stock is available in the right locations at the right time. By implementing the Stockrooms solution, SVT has taken another important step in efficiency and cost visibility.”
Toronto is a North American hotbed of broadcasting- and media-related activity. Accordingly, this Canadian jewel is also a major market for the VimBiz Broadcast Resource Management solution suite. This week Vimsoft is concluding onsite visits to a number of Toronto-area customers.
“We knew the jam-packed 3-day tour schedule would preclude us from visiting all of our valued Toronto-area customers,” noted Vimsoft Business Development Manager Tom Levesque, “so we focused this trip on three of the most diverse—an Outside Broadcast (OB) fleet, an educational institution, and a national public broadcaster. Dome Productions uses VimBiz for asset management, service workflow, and rental operations involving its fleet of mobile production units. Sheridan College manages media-related assets, rentals, and facility scheduling with VimBiz. The CBC uses a broad range of integrated VimBiz solutions, and is unique in being both a Canadian institution as well as a pioneer customer that helped shape the VimBiz that has become a broadcast industry standard. A tour like this enables Vimsoft to get an up-close look at how customers are using VimBiz to increase visibility, collaboration, and efficiency. This series of visits has been very rewarding for everyone involved. Customers gained some insight into additional benefits that can be leveraged, and Vimsoft brought home ideas that will make VimBiz even better.”
Last week's monstrous NAB Show 2013 in Las Vegas was the launch site for Vimsoft's latest EVO version of the company’s comprehensive VimBiz Broadcast Resource Management solution suite. VimBiz EVO drew a tremendous amount of positive feedback for the updated look and refined feel of the highly integrated modules. It was immediately apparent to visitors that VimBiz EVO is very adaptable and refined, and it was rewarding to see attendees relate to the Resource Scheduling, Rentals, and Broadcast Engineering workflows VimBiz helps manage more effectively.
“A lot of lightbulb moments occurred as people recognized the advantages of managing Resource Scheduling in the same database housing all technical assets, kits, parts, service histories, and rentals activities,” observed Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “The depth and breadth of VimBiz are consistent with Vimsoft’s mantras of increasing visibility, collaboration, and efficiency,” continued DeWolfe, “and EVO pushes these ideals even further. Visitors at NAB also responded well to a core VimBiz differentiator—a solid Engineering foundation that enables the ultimate solutions for Operations workflows such as Rentals and Resource Scheduling. This is unique in the industry, and NAB visitors recognized it.”
Vimsoft will be demonstrating a new standard in Broadcast Resource Management power and refinement at booth #N5815 at this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas—VimBiz EVO. The company promises this evolution of the popular VimBiz suite will change the expectation level for integrating Resource Scheduling, Rentals, and Engineering workflows. VimBiz remains the most comprehensive, integrated, and scalable Resource Management software in the broadcast industry, and the only one to successfully integrate Engineering workflows such as asset and service management with Operations processes such as rentals and production scheduling.
“VimBiz EVO is a natural evolution of solid software and database fundamentals, extensive broadcast industry experience, and phenomenally enthusiastic customers,” observed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, who continued, “EVO offers something to those both familiar with and uninitiated to VimBiz. Many who already experience the benefits will recognize even tighter integration between solutions, increased personalization options, and an enhancement of the pleasing, consistent, intuitive feel VimBiz has long been known for. Those new to the software will be blown away by the depth, breadth, and elegance of VimBiz. EVO is the ultimate VimBiz.”
The Canadian Suite is a NAB tradition of which Vimsoft is proud to be a perennial official sponsor. Broadcast professionals network in a casual atmosphere where everybody learns something valuable about our industry. The Vimsoft Team invites colleagues and friends to join us at the Canadian Suite ballroom in the Flamingo from 6-8pm April 8, 9, and 10.
Although distant neighbors, Québec-based French-language TV network TVA and Brazilian giant Rede Globo took similar paths to “VimBiz enlightenment.” Both run large operations with centralized equipment facilities, both had challenges managing the movement of technical assets and the associated costs, and both commissioned Vimsoft experts to analyze onsite workflows in autumn 2012. TVA management reached similar conclusions to those of their South American counterparts—VimBiz is the answer.
“TVA is approaching VimBiz implementation with a process-oriented enterprise mindset,” explained Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “First they will organize their technical assets and large number of stockroom parts and consumables,” continued Manuel, “and then VimBiz will enable service workflow efficiencies. A critical component of the implementation is VimBiz Rentals, which will provide more effective management and cost-tracking of equipment and parts moving in and out for production use. Future phases will likely involve implementation of complementary VimBiz Purchasing & Receiving and VimBiz Engineering Project Management solutions. TVA will be a model of efficiency, with large cost savings readily apparent.”
After a rigorous global software search, Brazil’s Rede Globo—the second-largest commercial TV network in the world—has entered into an agreement with Vimsoft to implement VimBiz Enterprise Rentals Management along with supporting VimBiz Asset Management and VimBiz Stockroom Management solutions. This important official step comes after Vimsoft expert consultants analyzed existing Broadcast Operations and Engineering workflows onsite in Rio de Janeiro in autumn 2012. Vimsoft consultants saw tremendous opportunities for efficiency improvements as Rede Globo prepares for FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
“We are very proud VimBiz came out on top during software evaluations,” noted Vimsoft Business Development Manager Tom Levesque, who added, “The onsite consultation and subsequent discussions revealed there could be more to this business relationship than leading-edge VimBiz software to manage movement of production-set materials, equipment, parts, and media assets. It was premature to identify Rede Globo as a customer last fall, but now that the deal is official it’s safe to say our teams have great synergy and a shared outlook of a long and mutually beneficial relationship. Exciting times are ahead for Vimsoft and Rede Globo as the World Cup and Summer Olympics approach.”
The Vimsoft Team has continued with improvements to load times and processing efficiency, added several new reports, and made significant enhancements in several modules, especially Rentals. The VimDev development framework underlying VimBiz makes it possible to complete development and QA cycles in a small fraction of the time and overhead required in traditional development environments. This efficiency enabled Vimsoft to easily meet an internal goal to issue a new VimBiz release in the first month of the New Year. Happy New Year, Vimsoft customers!
The VimBiz Updater Package contains an autorun tool that updates the customer’s VimBiz model while leaving data and configurations intact. This in itself is revolutionary, as traditionally an update to such mission-critical software involves a “breaking change.” Older technologies are associated with software updates that are very infrequent and require serious consideration before being implemented, usually at a substantial cost to the customer. In the past, customers had significantly customized versions of base software, leading to major concerns when a new version became available.
“With VimBiz such limitations are irrelevant,” affirmed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, who continued, “Customers provide the best ideas for new functionality. When we hear of a great enhancement we strive to provide it quickly in an interim release to the customer who came up with the idea. The customer knows they can easily run the VimBiz Updater and preserve all data and configurations. Positive feedback on the enhancement results in its incorporation into a general release to all customers. Every Vimsoft customer benefits…and nobody needs to engage in an agonizing cost/benefit analysis. Updates are covered under an ongoing service contract…the software evolves as each customer’s needs evolve. Everyone wins.”
Your organization is fueled by the activities of a diverse mix of employees. These critical Human Resources have published work schedules and a complex set of contract rules and working regulations. Administrative costs of managing proper employee compensation can be staggering. Whether done internally or through consultants the costs are high, and the costs of mistakes can be even higher.
Problem. Solved. VimBiz Timecard Claim Automation is an enterprise feature with a potential return on investment so impactful it can elevate a manager to stardom! As Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel explained, “Practically overnight a Vimsoft customer realized huge cost savings and eliminated employee frustration by having VimBiz automatically generate the proper claim codes for actual times worked by each employee. VimBiz contains all the contract rules and working regulations for each employee, as well as all the claim types associated with regular working time, absences, holidays, and work outside regular hours or otherwise exceptional. Employees simply verify or adjust their timecards to reflect what they actually worked. VimBiz does the rest, while also enabling employees to edit claims and flagging managers of such changes. The process is instant and highly accurate. Employees and managers love the simplicity, and the organization as a whole benefits from efficiently generated and proper compensation processing. Only VimBiz elegantly integrates published schedules and time reporting with the complexities of employee contracts and working regulations to automatically generate the correct claim codes across the entire enterprise.”
The Vimsoft Team is very excited to release the most comprehensive and most highly polished VimBiz version to date. There have been so many enterprise-scale features added to VimBiz over the past 18 months that the focus of this late-2012 release became refinement of what was already a well-tested and solid performer.
“Our customers will notice no radical changes to overall functionality,” informed Vimsoft Development Team Leader Marc Gallant. “Instead they will see notable enhancements to core VimBiz features and modules,” continued Gallant. “The ‘refinement’ focus resulted in significant enhancements to what was already an industry-leading user experience. Users will notice quicker load times and lightning-fast search results. VimBiz always incorporated highly flexible search options, but these have expanded to include additional logic to return quick results even with hundreds of thousands of records. Users also have additional personalization options, such as ‘app-like’ VimBiz desktop shortcuts and setting of preferred sizes for forms and grid columns. Performance improvements and personalization options will continue to be the central elements in our development team’s focus on what we call the VimBiz Experience. The last major release of 2012 will showcase our dedication to these central elements that leave an impression on every VimBiz user.”
One of the world’s largest commercial television networks has retained Vimsoft to provide expert guidance in complex Broadcast Operations and Engineering workflows involving movement of production-set materials, equipment, parts, and media assets. Vimsoft consulting experts offer decades of in-the-trenches broadcasting experience combined with knowledge of how technology facilitates workflow best practices. The VimBiz Broadcast Resource Management solution suite is a reflection of such expertise.
“The Vimsoft Team is very excited to be working with this prestigious customer,” indicated Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “We’re not saying who it is just yet, but we are expecting a long and mutually beneficial relationship with this major enterprise-scale network. The proposed VimBiz implementation will be a model of efficiency encompassing diverse workflows across several departments. We are looking forward to when it’ll be appropriate to say more, but for now it is apparent that this relationship will prove beneficial for all Vimsoft customers.”
VimBiz was a big hit at Europe’s biggest broadcasting convention. Three words in particular caught the attention of IBC2012 attendees who visited the Vimsoft stand—Scheduling, Rentals, Engineering.
“Nobody does that,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “There are Scheduling solutions and Rentals solutions,” continued DeWolfe, “and poor Engineering often tries to get by on spreadsheets and paper. Only VimBiz truly integrates Scheduling with Rentals and Engineering, thus providing media professionals complete visibility, and enabling them to manage conflicts, save costs, and make better decisions.”
Vimsoft will be demonstrating the VimBiz Broadcast Resource Management solution suite in stand 6.A25 at IBC2012 this September in Amsterdam. Vimsoft will highlight how VimBiz truly integrates Operations workflows such as Resource Scheduling and Rentals with Engineering processes such as Asset Management and Service.
Major League Baseball Productions is the team behind the video content and other baseball-related broadcast media that are seen by legions of fans via multiple networks across diverse geographies. MLB Productions management knew there was a need to more effectively manage technical assets and gain better control over renting kits and assets to producers in the field. However, they also knew efficiencies could be gained in Resource Scheduling…they even had a popular scheduling solution awaiting implementation.
Then MLB Productions learned VimBiz integrates all these areas in one solution suite.
“The benefits of an integrated solution were too hard to ignore,” observed Tom Levesque, Vimsoft Business Development Manager. “VimBiz addresses comprehensive Resource Scheduling needs at MLB Productions,” continued Levesque, “while enabling total visibility of asset statuses, service workflows, and rentals operations. A single centralized database reduces costs while increasing efficiency and collaboration. The enthusiastic professionals at MLB Productions are a pleasure to work with, and the Vimsoft Team anticipates a long and mutually beneficial relationship.”
One of the greatest advantages of VimBiz is the visibility it provides on activities that have real cost effects for organizations of all sizes. In VimBiz, pretty much any activity can be associated with a Cost Center, and reports provide visibility on trends and budget usage.
“The integrated nature of VimBiz plays a big role in tracking and managing costs,” observed Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, who continued, “A manager of an engineering service center may wish to divide a repair across multiple departments and Cost Centers. A Production Project may combine technical assets and human resources that need to reference a Cost Center for a specific duration, and any rentals performed within that project should reference the same Cost Center. An Engineering Project may involve the purchase of equipment and labor and the performance of internal service work that all should reference a project Cost Center. VimBiz accommodates such diverse workflow needs while providing valuable visibility into the effects on Cost Centers. This visibility supports better decisions and eliminates surprises.”
VimBiz Scheduling provides planners very powerful tools for pushing employee, team, and facility schedules to anyone in an organization. Employees and freelancers can view these schedules in a number of convenient ways, including VimBiz Web, Google Calendar, mobile phone, or iPad/tablet. In addition, a huge VimBiz benefit is the ability for the planner to be flagged on scheduling implications related to labor agreements and complex working regulations. This contractual information is reflected on VimBiz-generated Timecards, which also may be viewed and submitted for approval via VimBiz Web.
“VimBiz Web is a fantastic complement to Scheduling and Timecards,” noted Vimsoft Business Development Manager and scheduling expert Tom Levesque. “It is so convenient to check a schedule on the web and submit a timecard for actual work performed,” continued Levesque, “We know of companies that have invested millions of dollars in time-reporting systems that do not have the flexibility, rules engine, or convenience features of VimBiz Timecards, nor are such systems so integrated with published schedules or so accessible via web and mobile devices. Time reporting may not always grab headlines, but there are huge dollars to be saved in doing it right.”
Nowhere are the effects of organization and control more immediately evident than in Resource Scheduling—when things go smoothly nobody notices; when things go wrong the pains are felt right now. VimBiz Scheduling is the silent partner that keeps everyone organized and focused on what they should be doing, instead of distracted by what went wrong. VimBiz Scheduling enables the advanced planning and scheduling of facilities and associated roles. Role scheduling is a key VimBiz advantage—it’s much easier to schedule a studio than it is to schedule people. Studios don’t require breaks or have labor contracts that stipulate a maximum of four evening shifts per month. VimBiz Scheduling and integrated Timecards functionality accommodate such diverse needs while also providing advantages through integration with powerful VimBiz solutions for Assets, Service, and Rentals. VimBiz Scheduling enables powerful cost control over production projects, ensuring events remain on-time and on-budget.

Rentals operations in broadcasting are a unique blend of planned and unplanned events ranging from simple to complex. The VimBiz Rentals solution enables managers to efficiently accommodate the spontaneous drop-in, the online booking request, and the large live event with extensive preparation, multiple check-outs and check-ins, and cost tracking of multiple assets, kits, parts, and consumable items. Conflict-resolution tools ensure availability rules are respected, substitutions are triggered where appropriate, and the need for transfers, sub-rentals, or purchases are highlighted. Late returns are flagged, as are potentially affected rentals. Automatic notifications ensure the right people are kept aware of relevant rental information. Usage analysis and powerful reports enable better decisions and indicate optimal inventory levels. Additional visibility and efficiencies are provided via tight integration with VimBiz Engineering and VimBiz Scheduling solutions. VimBiz Rentals—the power to adapt.

French-language broadcaster Télé-Québec replaced several systems with their VimBiz implementation, and continues to leverage efficiencies in more areas of the business. A recent purchase of additional Heavy-User Licenses was aimed at spreading VimBiz both wider and deeper within the organization.
“The T-Q brain trust first used VimBiz to increase visibility of Engineering workflows,” noted Vimsoft Business Development Manager Tom Levesque, “but Operations workflows were part of the implementation plan from Day 1. The latest area of increased focus for Télé-Québec is VimBiz Rentals—this makes a lot of sense now that assets, parts, and service flows are all in place. Rentals represents an important bridge between Engineering and Scheduling. Our colleagues at T-Q recognized the benefits of integrating Engineering with Rentals, Scheduling, and Timecards, and mapped out a methodical plan to focus on these areas in a specific order. It has been a fun ride and the Vimsoft Team is looking forward to next steps in building the relationship.”
Raycom Media’s Central Broadcast Center in Charlotte, North Carolina is the nerve center for 45 television stations broadcasting across 36 US markets. In such an environment the importance of effectively managing Discrepancy Reports cannot be overstated, which made the Discrepancies module the focal point of Raycom’s original VimBiz purchase. More recently, the power of VimBiz has been used to not only capture critical DR data for analysis and trend spotting, but for frequency-based and highly filtered report distribution.
“Raycom does a masterful job of using VimBiz to make sure the right people at the right time are kept informed of relevant discrepancies data,” observed Development Team Leader Marc Gallant. “At Raycom,” continued Gallant, “this could mean a manager automatically receives a daily summary report for DRs within his or her station group, but may also receive DR notifications as they happen when certain values are met for various criteria such as severity, category, or whether make-good actions are needed. The degree of notification configurability available in VimBiz is unprecedented, and Raycom Media benefits from this in ways that have significant positive impact on the company’s profitability.”
Sheridan College shapes tomorrow’s leaders in digital media and communications. This makes the VimBiz implementation at Sheridan special—it provides tools to make the College more efficient, and it exposes students to technology that will be top of mind throughout their careers. Sheridan leverages several areas of VimBiz, especially for managing assets and rental workflows, and is currently ramping up across more of the College’s programs and expanding into VimBiz Scheduling for full facility planning and booking.
“The professionals we work closest with at Sheridan not only know broadcasting, they also understand software development,” explained Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “They have built their own software and know the pitfalls, limitations, and expenses of that approach, and also why it may have at one time appeared attractive,” continued DeWolfe, “This understanding elevates the appreciation of what the VimDev framework does behind the VimBiz software suite. The Sheridan team recognizes why VimBiz can be so comprehensive and integrated, and has confidence the software can easily be tailored as Sheridan’s needs evolve over time.”
Several enterprise-scale Vimsoft customers depend on VimBiz to manage day-to-day activities involving people, assets, and facilities, and these same organizations also have entrenched corporate financial and HR systems. For many of these companies, VimBiz plays an additional critically important role by interfacing with these enterprise systems, thereby keeping them updated with the freshest information.
"The inherent data integrity provided by the highly structured VimBiz database architecture means VimBiz makes financial and HR systems much cleaner," commented Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. "Various degrees of interface sophistication have become very popular among enterprise customers like SVT, PBS, MLB Network, and CBC," continued Manuel, "and the VimDev framework already contains building blocks to accommodate the wide array of customer interface wishes, making system integration very cost-effective and available within appealingly short timeframes."
The implementation of the powerful VimBiz Scheduling solution at Swedish national public broadcaster SVT made the benefits of consolidating complementary workflows abundantly clear. SVT management recognized that additional efficiencies could be leveraged by incorporating the VimBiz Engineering and VimBiz Rentals solutions, providing one powerful centralized database for assets, service tracking, production projects, rentals, and charge-backs.
"When scheduling production projects it is often necessary to perform rentals for additional equipment that will be included on invoices or charge-backs," noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. "The efficiency-minded professionals at SVT knew VimBiz could handle all this in one system," added Manuel, "and they also realized adding VimBiz Rentals and VimBiz Engineering solutions would give their teams more visibility on important information such as the service status of assets that are critical components of rental kits. With VimBiz, users at SVT have everything at their fingertips and the invoicing, charge-backs, and reporting are all coming from the same system, lending accuracy to operations and supporting better decisions."
San Diego PBS station KPBS is following through on plans to implement VimBiz Operations modules after successful initial phases involving Engineering modules and the Discrepancies module. The focus at KPBS will now turn to facility and personnel scheduling, employee timecards, and rentals workflows.
“Our colleagues at KPBS are very proactive, methodical, and committed to efficiency,” commented Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft. “Advanced Planning & Scheduling was of interest from Day 1,” continued Manuel, “but in their case it made sense to first more effectively manage assets, employees, and service workflows. With those areas running smoothly and with the high degree of integration between VimBiz modules, it will be relatively easy to begin focusing on Scheduling, Timecards, and Rentals. KPBS will, in effect, have a single centralized database-driven application suite providing the capacity to harness efficiencies from all 8 primary VimBiz solution areas—Enterprise Asset Management, Service Management, Stockroom Management, Engineering Project Management, Purchasing & Receiving Management, Discrepancy Reporting, Rentals Management, and Advanced Planning & Scheduling. Without VimBiz this is simply unheard of. KPBS is a model customer…one our team is very proud to be working with.”
La Société Radio-Canada (French-language CBC) enjoys the efficiency benefits of an enterprise-scale VimBiz implementation to manage assets, parts, people, and service operations across its radio, television, and internet operations. Radio-Canada management also knew VimBiz could drastically improve efficiency in the organization’s rental workflows, and thus VimBiz Rentals has become the latest area of focus for SRC’s proactive team of broadcasting professionals.
“Rentals has always been part of the SRC implementation plan,” observed Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “and it is very rewarding to see the fervor with which this valued customer has strategically rolled out VimBiz.” Manuel continued, “Radio-Canada has diverse check-out and check-in operations, a large number of kits, a large vehicle fleet, and they diligently barcode everything…so VimBiz Rentals is a great fit for their operations. Another key area of fit is with respect to products that aren’t assets. VimBiz enables SRC to rent parts and consumables as well as assets, and to manage charges at resale or rental rates, enabling very powerful invoicing and internal charge-back capabilities. Radio-Canada has a real powerhouse combination of integrated VimBiz functionality, as befitting an enterprise of this size and complexity.”
Media 21 prides itself on being the leading provider of the most advanced audio-visual technology in Trinidad and Tobago—an attribute that immediately drew the company to VimBiz and RFID. The St. James-based organization also had an ideal project to take advantage of such technology—a large-scale physical relocation for the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, which has its own television broadcasting unit.
“The Parliament move is an ideal project in which to showcase the Asset Management power, flexibility, and user-friendliness of VimBiz,” observed Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “Adding cutting-edge RFID tags and mobile-reading functionality further emphasizes the drive to implement the most advanced technology,” continued DeWolfe, “and VimBiz Mobile on a handheld RFID- and barcode-reading device will provide Parliament with even more powerful Asset Management tools, including the ability to write unique asset identification information to their RFID tags. VimBiz and RFID…it’s a real powerhouse combination.”
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has enjoyed the benefits of VimBiz for several years. However, executive-level managers recognized there were even more cost-saving advantages to be leveraged through VimBiz, and a particular area of focus became the VimBiz Discrepancies module.
“The CBC now uses VimBiz to centralize and manage vital discrepancy information reported from across the country,” noted industry veteran and Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “Managers knew VimBiz was easily configurable to the way CBC prefers to handle Discrepancy Reports (DRs),” continued Manuel, “so the decision was made to drastically cut costs by using the Discrepancies module. Now the sales team instantly knows responsibilities to advertisers, and others are kept updated on follow-ups and resolutions. CBC even has VimMail to enable automatic e-mail notifications and report generation so managers receive the most relevant discrepancy information at the appropriate times. Discrepancies is an area in broadcasting where it’s easy to see the effect when things don’t go as planned. CBC ‘gets’ this…and now has a powerful tool to manage DRs, track trends, and lower costs.”
VimBiz Resource Scheduling and Timecards management have received a lot of recent attention from existing customers, new accounts, and at NAB Show 2011. The latest news—after a rigorous and methodical evaluation process involving Resource Scheduling vendors from around the globe, Vimsoft has been selected to provide Swedish national public broadcaster Sveriges Television AB (SVT) with advanced planning and scheduling functionality along with management of timecards and labor contracts.
“We’ve had some nice feathers added to the Vimsoft cap over the past few years, and this one is particularly special,” observed a proud Mitch Manuel, Vimsoft President. “The evaluation process was handled in an exceptionally professional manner, and it allowed us to prove our technology,” continued Manuel. “It was very rewarding to see the VimBiz solution validated through such an intensive process. We are very excited to be working with the dedicated and professional team at SVT.”
The WETA Engineering department was quick to recognize the benefits of using VimBiz to manage their assets, service workflows, and shift logs. The DC-area radio and television broadcaster had recognized long ago that a central database was the best way to manage assets and service, but they needed to get away from their older-technology solution that was no longer supported. The future-proof nature of VimBiz became very attractive.
“Engineers’ eyes light up when they see VimBiz,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “and they get really excited when they discover the technology under the hood. As a Broadcast Engineer myself, I can attest to this feeling. It becomes obvious that VimBiz was created for Engineering and Operations workflows, and taking obsolescence off the table makes VimBiz very compelling. We’re glad to share these observations with our friends at WETA.”
The quality of traffic at NAB Show 2011 was phenomenal for Vimsoft, and reactions were hugely positive to the comprehensive functionality and value provided by the industry-leading VimBiz Broadcast Engineering & Operations solution suite. Vimsoft showcased RFID expertise and focused the spotlight on Operations this year—most notably on Resource Scheduling and Timecards functionality.
“Wow…what a show,” observed Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “RFID hardware and tags working with the VimBiz software triggered some interesting conversations,” continued DeWolfe, “and most often these led to discussions of deep-seated challenges faced by broadcast organizations today—challenges our visitors witnessed being addressed through VimBiz. What we saw were engineers tired of using Band-Aid solutions and operations people hugely frustrated by limitations of other scheduling software. There was a real air of excitement created upon discovery that VimBiz integrates engineering with operations. No other solution effectively does this…and doing so just makes so much sense. The NAB audience really grasped this…there were lots of ‘A-ha!’ moments, which were really fun. Based on this year’s NAB Show, 2011 is shaping up to be huge.”
Vimsoft will be in the North Hall (“Management & Systems”) in booth #N1029 at NAB Show 2011. The Vimsoft Team will present the latest modules and features of broadcasting’s most powerful Engineering and Operations management solution—VimBiz. Key highlights this year include a focus on Resource Scheduling/Production Planning, as well as a very cool RFID demonstration.

The Canadian Suite is a popular NAB tradition and Vimsoft will again be an official sponsor of this networking event. Management and staff invite colleagues and friends of Vimsoft to join us at the Canadian Suite ballroom in the Flamingo from 6-8pm April 11, 12, and 13.
Broadcasting icon PBS has internal VimBiz champions that love the flexibility of the solution and the degree of integration between modules and across platforms. They have expanded VimBiz deployment to include Rich, Web, and Mobile platforms, inbound VimMail e-mail service, a barcode solution, and VimBiz Device Monitoring. And they see even more potential.
“The VimDev development framework provides system-interface building blocks within the VimBiz application,” explained Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, who continued, “This means quick, cost-effective, quality-assured integration is possible between VimBiz and existing systems. PBS management recognizes this and has commissioned Vimsoft to establish an automatic real-time bi-directional interface between VimBiz and a corporate financial system.” This is an exciting project with thought leaders at one of the most respected institutions in broadcasting. “It represents another pride-infused feather in the Vimsoft corporate cap,” beamed Manuel.
The CBC is like an old and dear friend to Vimsoft. The broadcasting giant ranks among the earliest and largest of Vimsoft’s customers, and the two organizations share thoughts frequently enough that Vimsoft can sometimes predict future CBC plans and CBC managers often anticipate where VimBiz development will go. Key individuals within the CBC have been driving forces behind primarily the Engineering functionality of the VimBiz application suite. So it is no big surprise that VimBiz deployment has continued throughout the organization, but it is nonetheless very rewarding for everyone involved.
“CBC has evolved nicely in terms of the depth and breadth of the various VimBiz modules used, but more and more we have been seeing lately that there has been accelerated adoption by various regions that are all part of the CBC,” observed Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, who went on to say, “This further validates VimBiz as a true enterprise-scale solution, as the CBC has users stretching from Halifax to Vancouver, across the Prairies, and in the Toronto-based nerve center where it all started.”
French-language television and radio broadcasting heavyweight La Société Radio-Canada (SRC, or “Radio-Canada” to most) stepped up big with an enterprise VimBiz implementation one year ago. Eager to expand VimBiz-derived efficiencies across multiple regions throughout the nation, SRC has again made a major commitment to the broadcasting industry’s only truly integrated Engineering & Operations solution—VimBiz.
“Radio-Canada is everywhere in French-Canadian culture,” observed Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “Big companies have complex processes with respect to managing assets, service, parts, and other areas,” continued Manuel, “so VimBiz has been a revelation in terms of accommodating workflows and enhancing communication, accuracy, reporting, and decision-making power. This latest expansion is an example of success breeding success…for both customer and Vimsoft.”
The US DoD Defense Information School (DINFOS) uses VimBiz for everything from IT Help Desk (replacing an expensive enterprise system) to rentals, and also for managing service operations, stockroom inventories, and capital assets. DINFOS personnel and a major defense contractor performed extensive analysis to determine that VimBiz incorporated the most functionality, the highest degree of integration, and (very importantly) easy and cost-effective customization. Throughout 2009 and 2010 DINFOS expanded its enterprise VimBiz deployment, and this trend has continued into 2011.
“Our managers and developers love working with DINFOS,” commented Vimsoft Development Team Leader Marc Gallant. “They already use many areas of VimBiz,” noted Gallant, “and are true believers in the power of the VimDev framework that underlies the application suite. They have harnessed this power for many workflows, such as those related to complex authorization schema as well as offline management of stock inventory. We look forward to continued growth within DINFOS—a customer that commands the utmost respect from our like-minded technical thinkers here at Vimsoft.”
With headquarters near the Lobster Capital of the World, Captain Dan’s is a major player in seafood processing on Canada’s East Coast. What was it about Vimsoft and VimBiz that caught their attention?
“They saw the inventory reports provided by Vimsoft customer Maritime Cold Storage and knew that level of accountability could only come from a very sophisticated software solution,” explained Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “In food processing there are tightening regulations on traceability,” continued Manuel, “and Captain Dan’s has a reputation for high quality. They wanted to ensure quality and lower costs while staying well ahead of the regulatory curve.” After an introduction to the VimBiz solution suite and Vimsoft’s VimDev development framework, Captain Dan’s acted quickly. “We get attention for helping manage critical workflows at broadcasting companies that most people are familiar with,” noted Manuel, “but it is not lost on savvy managers that our technology is ideal for real-time management and analysis of many business processes, such as those involving warehousing or production of goods.”
Vimsoft is proud to announce that Raycom Media has become the most recent customer of the information management powerhouse. Raycom is one of the largest broadcasters in the United States, owning and operating 45 television stations across 36 markets.
“Raycom managers take Discrepancy Reporting very seriously,” observed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “These are very intelligent people with a keen sense of the costs incurred by on-air and other types of discrepancies. Only VimBiz could provide the level of analysis and configurability of automatic notifications that Raycom was looking for,” continued Manuel, “and integration with all the other Engineering and Operations functionalities of VimBiz only made the offering more compelling. We at Vimsoft are so proud to welcome Raycom Media onboard.”
French-language sports broadcaster RDS has recently grown its VimBiz user base by leaps and bounds as the efficiencies provided by VimBiz have become increasingly obvious.
“We love it when this happens,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “We support customers who take a methodical implementation approach,” continued DeWolfe, “and we are very confident the benefits provided by VimBiz will validate the initial purchase decision…and lead to increased growth within proactive customers like RDS. This results-based approach is very rewarding for both the customer and Vimsoft.”
Vimsoft often gets industry accolades and supportive customer feedback for the Engineering modules in the best-of-breed VimBiz solution, but the recent Content & Communications World (CCW) 2010 expo was the site of additional praise for Operations modules designed for workflows related to activities such as Resource Scheduling, Timecard Management, Rentals, and Discrepancy Reporting.
“We decided to use CCW 2010 to highlight VimBiz Operations solutions, especially the Scheduler functionality for planning and scheduling human, facility, and equipment resources,” explained Joel DeWolfe, Vimsoft Marketing Director. “We attracted a lot of interest from new prospects, existing customers, and forward-thinking resellers and systems integrators,” noted DeWolfe, who added, “We saw a lot of people experience that ‘lightbulb’ moment when it was recognized that DRs and planning/scheduling and rentals and other operations can be totally integrated with asset inventories, service management, stockroom parts, POs and invoicing, and other areas. This was fun to watch!”

As another fiscal year comes to a close Vimsoft management is very pleased to announce that the company has, once again, more than doubled sales compared with the previous twelve-month period. This growth trend was recognized in 2009 by the Progress Media Group, who named Vimsoft one of its “Fastest Growing Companies” and indicated the information-management powerhouse was the top-performing company based in the province of New Brunswick.
“The fiscal-year 2010 results reflect not only a new and exciting customer base, but also something we have been predicting for some time—significant growth in commitments from existing customers,” observed Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft. Manuel explained, “Despite challenging economic conditions, Vimsoft had forecast increased growth. The VimBiz software suite really shines when efficiency becomes paramount. Our existing customers had already experienced tremendous efficiencies from VimBiz implementation, so the business case for increased commitments was very solid. The bottom line is we make our customers more efficient by enabling them to make more informed decisions, a fact that reflects nicely on our own bottom line.”
A public service of San Diego State University, KPBS is part of the PBS radio and television broadcasting family. Station management quickly recognized the enormous power of the VimBiz application suite and appreciated that the technology was already in place at a national level within PBS.
“Again the PBS family has demonstrated admirable decision-making efficiency,” remarked Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “One of the key KPBS deal-brokers is a recognized engineering leader within the PBS family and it didn’t take him long to see the benefits of VimBiz,” noted Manuel, who continued, “We look forward to the implementation of Engineering modules at KPBS and progression to Operations workflows as we expand our relationship.”
The Bowhead family of companies provides an enormous range of products and services to government and commercial customers, and they are especially prominent in delivering world-class engineering and information technology services to the US Department of Defense. Vimsoft not only shares a customer base with Bowhead, but also shares a commitment to the highest standards in data management.
“The fit between Bowhead and Vimsoft is natural,” observed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “We share a commitment to best practices,” continued Manuel, “and Bowhead acted on this by sending personnel to become Certified VimBiz Administrators so they could better manage their internal processes as well as manage their customer projects. It’s a highly valued relationship with enormous upside potential.”

Acting on plans made last fall, Canada’s largest radio broadcaster has more than doubled its initial VimBiz user base and launched into a full-scale barcode inventory system also purchased from Vimsoft.
“The Astral Media Radio team is fun to work with because they have some true hardcore engineers,” opined Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “As a broadcast engineer myself I relate to the challenges these people face daily,” continued Manuel, “and seeing their eyes light up when they use VimBiz is so gratifying because I experienced the same thing. Expanding the user base and putting a solid barcode system in place are signs that an organization is committed to VimBiz as The Way. We get as excited as the customer does about this progression.”
La Société Radio-Canada (SRC), referred to by many as “Radio-Canada,” is the French-language television and radio broadcasting side of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Radio-Canada is a very large enterprise with operations stretching from coast to coast. Montréal-based SRC management saw many advantages of entrenching VimBiz in the operation’s day-to-day business and made the commitment to implement the application across the country.
“The multilingual nature of the software was an obvious advantage,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “but even more important to Radio-Canada were the advantages of organizing the vast operation’s assets, parts, and people into a single and powerful database with the integration and adaptability only the VimBiz application suite and underlying VimDev framework can provide. Radio-Canada has done its homework and is committed to a VimBiz-driven future. We at Vimsoft are very proud to welcome this enterprise customer that represents such a large part of the fabric of French-Canadian culture.”
“Preparation” is a recurring theme for everyone involved in an Olympiad. From athletes and coaches to organizers and broadcasters, everyone wants to use the best tools possible to prepare for the Olympic Games—and to help them perform optimally when the world is watching. Accordingly, leading production facilities provider Dome Productions uses VimBiz to prepare for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.
“Dome Productions benefits from a wide range of integrated VimBiz functionality, and the Rentals module is an area of particularly heavy usage,” observed Vimsoft Development Team Leader Marc Gallant. “Dome stages very complex rentals for host broadcast services like for the 2010 Olympics,” continued Gallant, “There can be multiple check-out times for different asset kits and skids on any given rental, plus they can split up invoices, transfer assets from different locations to Vancouver-area venues, and have complete transparency on all equipment onboard their production units—such as Dome’s phenomenal ‘Thunder’ multi-format HD digital mobile. Dome uses the absolute latest broadcasting technologies to gain competitive advantage. At Vimsoft we’re proud to be a part of this edge.”
Télé-Québec is a French-language public educational television network headquartered in Montréal. The company’s programming and local stations are an important part of the cultural landscape for French-speaking Canadians. The multilingual nature of the VimBiz application suite was an obvious advantage recognized by Télé-Québec management, but the purchase decision was based more on breadth of functionality and the enormous flexibility enabled by the VimDev development framework.
“Télé-Québec is a customer that really pushes VimBiz across the broadcasting spectrum in terms of functional areas using the system,” said Paul Manuel, Vice-President of Vimsoft. Manuel continued, “They love the asset management and service workflow aspects, but they will bridge engineering and operations by using VimBiz for functions such as timecard management and scheduling of facilities and other resources. The benefits of a single powerful database application used across the organization very quickly made Télé-Québec management raving fans of Vimsoft products and services. We’re very happy to add Télé-Québec to our list of enthusiastic customers.”
The Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning is a premier polytechnic college with an established reputation in several disciplines, including a renowned School of Animation, Arts & Design. Students at Sheridan College have access to cutting-edge equipment and technology in programs such as Film and Television Professional Training. These valuable tools now include VimBiz.
“The VimBiz software suite enables enormous efficiencies in an educational environment such as Sheridan College,” stated Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “An important area VimBiz will provide huge benefits is Rentals,” observed Manuel, adding, “Not only will the college have the best tools for managing school assets and rental check-outs and check-ins, but with VimBiz Web students will have online access to functionality such as booking equipment and kits. A healthy benefit for Vimsoft is the exposure of these professionals-in-training to the power of VimBiz.”
Corus is the powerhouse Canadian specialty multimedia entertainment company behind such brands as YTV, Treehouse, W Network, and Movie Central. Corus saw the VimBiz light back in 2007, and recently that light has become more intense.
“It is so gratifying to see customers expand the use of VimBiz within their organizations,” beamed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “It validates a measure of value that VimBiz provides the user company,” continued Manuel, “and solidifies that customer’s commitment to more efficient Engineering and Operations workflows. Corus is on the right path, and Vimsoft is proud to be sharing in their success.”
The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York will be the site for the Content & Communications World (CCW) Expo October 14-15. CCW is really three shows in one, encompassing HD World, SATCON, and IP Media Expo. Vimsoft will be in booth #1050 in the HD World section of the CCW floorplan.
“We like the size and focus of the CCW show,” noted Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “It is the premier broadcasting and media show on the US east coast,” continued DeWolfe, “and attendees attracted to any of the three major areas of the expo are ideal prospects for the VimBiz application suite.”
Vimsoft welcomes existing customers and colleagues as well as new faces to booth #1050. In a corner booth facing the food area, we won’t be hard to find! Plan on dropping in to learn more about effectively managing media assets, parts inventory, service workflows, projects, order cycles, discrepancies, rentals, documentation, and much more.
Recently 100% acquired by Comcast, New England Cable News (NECN) is the largest 24-hour regional news network in the United States. Winner of numerous broadcast journalism awards, NECN is a prime example of an organization that strives for excellence in every operational capacity. Engineering and IT management at NECN have long recognized the advantages of a proper asset management database. They immediately appreciated the highly normalized relational database architecture of VimBiz, and quickly gained an understanding of the VimDev framework that underlies the application. The more they investigated the integration between the various VimBiz modules, the more they were impressed.
“The attractive and intuitive user interface of VimBiz is often what strikes people immediately,” noted Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, “but things really get fun when broadcast professionals dig deeper and experience the adaptability of the workflows, the elegance of the database architecture, and the immense power of the VimDev framework. The NECN team totally ‘gets it’ when they look at VimBiz. Of course, they love all the modules like Assets, Service, Projects, Purchasing, Stockrooms, and E-Documents, but because they understand the power of VimDev they know VimBiz can easily adapt to future needs.”
Through a variety of media platforms, the US DoD Defense Media Activity (DMA) provides news and information to US forces worldwide. DMA San Antonio is responsible for worldwide communications involving the US Air Force. Media experts at DMA San Antonio already had gotten a taste for the power of VimBiz through their relationships with The Pentagon Channel, American Forces Network, and the Defense Information School.
“DMA San Antonio came to Vimsoft already excited and armed with significant knowledge about VimBiz functionality,” recalled Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “This new DMA customer has personnel all over the globe,” continued Manuel, “so they were impressed by the flexibility offered by the software—multiple languages, both Rich and Web platforms, highly configurable workflows and notifications, powerful and customizable reports. They were already aware of some of the powerful asset management and service management capabilities. When DMA-SA saw all the other integrated modules combined with the flexibility provided by the VimDev framework, they were blown away. The period from first conversation to contract-in-hand was very short.”
Réseau des sports (RDS) is a powerhouse Canadian French-language sports network owned by CTVglobemedia and ESPN. The widely recognized property has exclusive rights to French-language broadcasting of all NHL Montréal Canadiens hockey games, ensuring fixated eyeballs from throngs of passionate Habs fans. RDS knows its audience, knows its advertisers, and knows the importance of being light on its feet. A high priority is placed on operational efficiency.
Enter VimBiz. “Of course we love working with a household name like RDS,” observed Vimsoft Development Team Leader Marc Gallant, “and I am a Canadiens fan, but from a professional standpoint this is an ideal customer—employees are flexible in accepting new ideas, dedicated to their jobs and company, and committed to improving efficiency. VimBiz hit a lot of hot buttons for RDS. More effective management of assets and service were high priorities for both engineering and IT. The fact VimBiz accommodates French users really pushed the agenda to implement VimBiz. The RDS team is a rewarding bunch to work with.”
It only made sense. Montréal-based Sono Vidéo has a solid reputation for expertise in audiovisual, broadcast, videoconference, automation, and medical solutions. They are very strong in the largely French-speaking Québec market, where the multilingual capabilities of VimBiz are particularly attractive. Sono Vidéo has had considerable success reselling VimBiz, but management recognized a huge advantage of partnering with Vimsoft was using the application suite in-house.
“Systems Integrators have complex operations that are all accommodated in VimBiz,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe, who further explained, “They put together projects for customers, they order and receive products, they perform sales forecasts, they maintain vast document libraries, they service what they sell, they rent equipment, and they sell service contracts. With VimBiz a Systems Integrator can manage their projects and customer profiles, link them to orders and assets, and manage all service operations. In addition to the in-house efficiencies a HUGE incentive is the ability to sell a service contract and pre-loaded asset database to their customer. This represents both a revenue opportunity and an enormous addition to the firm’s value proposition to its customers. For development company, reseller, and customer it’s win-win-win.”
The Defense Information School (DINFOS) is a United States Department of Defense institution dedicated to excellence in organizational communication. Military communications professionals attend DINFOS to broaden skills related to broadcast operations, broadcasting equipment maintenance, journalism, video production, photography, multimedia, and other disciplines related to public affairs and visual information. The implementation of the VimBiz application suite is a solid endorsement from an organization with a strong commitment to education and best practices.
“DINFOS represents a VimBiz implementation with perhaps the most diverse user base yet seen,” noted broadcasting expert and Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. Manuel continued, “There are broadcast maintenance personnel documenting equipment service, students checking out rental kits, an entire IT help desk managing workflow (and replacing their old enterprise system), and even a team of developers using the VimDev framework to modify the software and add DINFOS-specific functionality. Contracted experts and DINFOS personnel did their homework, and VimBiz was recognized as the only solution that could accommodate these diverse operations in one integrated application AND at the same time be fully customizable. We love getting involved with a team that can really push the software and the development framework, so working with DINFOS is a real pleasure.”
Vimsoft first met with PBS engineering and technical operations experts at NAB 2009 in Las Vegas. Within 6 weeks a deal was signed.
“For those with an appreciation for elegant software design, innovative database architecture, and efficiency-driving functionality, VimBiz represents a Holy Grail application suite,” observed proud Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “There’s no question that ‘techies’ will always fall in love with VimBiz,” continued Manuel, “but the beauty of elegant software is that it excites the techno-minded while being intuitive and powerful to those who just want an application to work and be easy to use. PBS has a deep understanding of these two perspectives and immediately recognized VimBiz as something special. We’re delighted to have this universally respected organization as a customer, and we’re very excited to work more closely with the insightful professionals on the PBS team.”
The Training and Education Center (TEC) at the McGhee Tyson Base in Tennessee is seen as the crown jewel of the USAF Air National Guard, and it is also the home of the television production studios for TEC-TV. Engineers at ANG TEC-TV recognized the need for more efficient equipment management and service workflows. They also wanted something that accommodated scheduling needs and was scalable and proven.
“The clear choice became VimBiz,” announced Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “ANG representatives loved the functionality of VimBiz, loved the advantages of the underlying VimDev development framework, and were comforted by an impressive and satisfied customer base,” continued DeWolfe, who added, “VimBiz hit the hot buttons of wide functionality, cost-effectiveness, scalability, adaptability, and industry acceptance.”
The story sounds very similar to the Maritime Cold Storage situation in 2008 (see January 22, 2008 news story)—a brand-new eastern Canadian Public Refrigerated Warehouse with a proactive General Manager disenchanted with the limitations and pricetag of traditional warehouse management solutions.
André Gallant is the General Manager of Eastern Cold Storage in picturesque Prince Edward Island. Gallant knew the pitfalls of having separate systems for warehousing, invoicing, and accounting. Recalled Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “Opening Eastern Cold Storage in June 2009 without a solid system to manage warehouse traffic was a nightmare scenario Gallant did not want to face, and he immediately recognized the efficiency and cost benefits of having invoices automatically generated based on warehouse activities. Public warehouses generate revenue from arrivals, storage, handling fees, and withdrawals. Having accurate information about these activities is critical to profitable operation, but also provides a huge customer service benefit since customers often contact the warehousing operation to determine what they had in storage and what fees were incurred within a given period. Powerful VimBiz reports make our customer look really good in these situations.”
It’s not top secret that Vimsoft has many loyal fans within the United States Department of Defense. Some of these supporters work with existing VimBiz installations such as The Pentagon Channel and the American Forces Network Broadcast Center. Some of the staunchest supporters, however, have been those who have recognized that Vimsoft technology has a wider application beyond management of broadcasting assets, order cycles, and service workflows. The VimDev framework behind the VimBiz application suite is seen by these visionaries as the ideal platform upon which to base software that will replace systems handicapped by older, less flexible, and more expensive technology.
Some of these visionaries hang their hats at a branch of the Defense Media Activity called Television-Audio Support Activity (T-ASA). T-ASA procures equipment, designs systems, and provides support and logistics services for US military broadcasting installations around the globe. “Some of the T-ASA decision-makers have long voiced their support for Vimsoft technology,” noted Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, “and now they’ve really stepped up by becoming a VimBiz Enterprise Edition customer and having our experts review existing systems so that critical processes can be migrated to a much more flexible, future-proof, and cost-effective platform. The people at T-ASA are a highly intelligent team that recognizes the enormous efficiency advantages of the VimDev framework and the applications built on it. They’re a fun bunch to work with, and Vimsoft anticipates a long and mutually beneficial professional relationship with this extremely valuable customer.”
For Montréal-based SETTE, postproduction and signal-management services are the bread and butter, while efficiency is a competitive advantage. Appropriately, the VimBiz suite was seen as an ideal fit for managing equipment and service workflow. More than that, a real attraction was the powerful basis for decision-making the application provides management.
“With VimBiz, SETTE has complete transparency on asset life cycles,” observed Paul Manuel, Vice-President of Vimsoft, “and having instant access to reports that show how many, in what locations, in what status, and total ownership costs can be very powerful in making decisions about labor, equipment purchases, warranty renewals, and many other activities important to managers focused on efficiency. Managers are much more effective with the right tools, and for broadcast engineering workflows, VimBiz provides by far the most powerful tools.”
Recession? Despite lower overall NAB attendance numbers this year, traffic was steady and more highly qualified than in previous years. Vimsoft hosted its largest-ever booth with more demo and meeting area, and even more VimBiz functionality to show off! Reactions were phenomenal to the news that Vimsoft is increasingly opening up the company’s VimDev Development & Customization Toolkit to customers. There was huge approval for the extremely slick VimScan Inventory Technology, new Cable Management sub-module, Project Management workflows, Discrepancy Reporting functions, and Device Monitoring capabilities.
A huge thank-you to both new and annual visitors to the Vimsoft booth at this year’s NAB Show. Together you have made 2009 the most successful NAB yet for the developers of the industry-leading VimBiz Equipment Asset Management solution. We look forward to building on existing relationships with our valued raving-fan customers, and to establishing new relationships with prospects met at NAB 2009. Once again, it’s going to be a great year.
Latin America’s largest television and radio broadcasting network, Albavisión, became instant VimBiz fans at NAB 2008 (see related May 8, 2008 story). A pilot was quickly implemented and data from more than a dozen Spanish-speaking countries were imported. Albavisión immediately recognized the adaptability the VimDev framework provided the VimBiz application, and several enhancements were implemented to accommodate financial variables and structures important to the company. All Vimsoft customers have received the benefits of these enhancements and, as typical, no customization fees were involved.
Another big VimBiz advantage recognized by Albavisión executives was multilingual operation. This has certainly caught the attention of several companies where simultaneous English and French operations are the norm, but Albavisión was Vimsoft’s first customer with a large Spanish-speaking workforce.
“The Albavisión team knew there were huge efficiencies to be gained by using an Equipment Asset Management solution where users could work in the language of their preference,” noted Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “Executives in Miami can run reports in English while engineers in Guatemala work in Spanish,” explained DeWolfe, “and the labels, the data in the fields, and the reports all translate. Albavisión users can even make adjustments to reflect preferred translations. In fact, the close relationship between Vimsoft and Albavisión provides benefits for everybody. Albavisión gets the world’s most powerful EAM tool tailored to their needs, and Vimsoft gets VimBiz populated with another language, making the application even more attractive to any organization with Spanish operations.”
In the past Vimsoft has won awards in recognition of the innovative technologies it produces. This time around Vimsoft is being recognized as one of Atlantic Canada’s fastest growing companies in terms of revenue growth. Each year Progress Media Group lists regional organizations that have demonstrated the most significant increases in revenues over the previous 3-year period. Vimsoft was named the top-performing company in its home province of New Brunswick.
“This distinction validates the efforts of our software development and marketing teams,” said a proud Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft, “and it is also a fantastic indicator of customer satisfaction, since it is our customers that not only increase their commitment to Vimsoft over time, but also do a fair share of the ‘selling’ through their raving endorsements of our company, our products, and our services.”

As one of Canada’s largest media companies, Montréal-based Astral Media has complex equipment asset management needs and multiple service shops with activities coordinated among several facilities. Astral management recognized the efficiency advantages the VimBiz Equipment Asset Management suite would provide and a purchase was made in 2007. Since that time, VimBiz has helped Astral Media to streamline workflows and has greatly improved management of capital assets at the company. To further expand benefits provided by VimBiz, Astral Media has more recently purchased additional software licenses and taken advantage of barcode technology offered by Vimsoft.
“Astral has experienced tremendous efficiency benefits with VimBiz,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, who added, “Their barcoding initiative is a great example of asset management best practices in action, and is something Vimsoft is very proud to be a part of.”
With all eyes on the countdown-to-launch clock in the lobby, MLB Network management is keenly aware of the importance of efficient processes. The new cable network already had a powerful JD Edwards financial package and implemented the industry-leading VimBiz Equipment Asset Management application suite in the fall. MLB Network managers along with engineering and IT staff recognized that VimBiz was no ordinary asset management tool. VimBiz incorporates powerful product request, authorization, Purchase Order, receiving, and internal delivery mechanisms. Inevitably the conversation at MLB Network turned toward how to interface these two powerful systems while still respecting the aggressive launch target.
“We are so proud to be a part of this historical endeavor—the largest launch in cable network history,” noted Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft. “The VimBiz-JDE interface project at MLB Network serves as a prime example of the advantages of the technology that underlies VimBiz,” continued Manuel, “and even with the clock ticking loudly the interfaced purchasing and receiving workflow will be smooth as silk by January 1.”
January 1, 2009 News Update: MLB Network has successfully launched into over 50 million homes. The VimBiz-JD Edwards interface works seamlessly, tying together powerful acquisition processes with asset lifecycles and inventory management.
Crossroads Television System (CTS) has had a busy year. Featuring family-values programming, CTS added to its existing operations in Burlington, Ontario with launches in both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. With such rapid expansion, CTS Director of Engineering David Storey recognized more than ever the need for efficient management of equipment and software assets. Additionally, CTS manages and services its own equipment, as well as equipment belonging to other companies. Accordingly, CTS needed powerful reporting and a system with the flexibility to handle multiple service workflow variations.
“Broadcast over the air, via cable, and on all major satellite carriers, CTS is a programming staple in every province and territory across Canada,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “CTS is always moving forward, always has complex projects on the go—regional expansion, high-def, you name it. The VimBiz application suite really shines in the fast-paced world of broadcast engineering. Losing transparency on statuses related to projects, assets, and service results in enormous inefficiencies and rapidly escalating costs. CTS recognizes this, and now has the most powerful broadcasting EAM solution on the planet to dramatically increase efficiency,” continued Manuel.
Major League Baseball and minority shareholders Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Cox Communications, and Comcast will launch the MLB Network into approximately 50 million homes on January 1, 2009. This will be the largest rollout in cable network history. With such an aggressive launch schedule, MLB Network had an immediate need for the industry’s most powerful Equipment Asset Management solution. VimBiz surpassed MLB Network executives’ expectations and the purchase occurred very quickly.
“This is such a unique opportunity for Vimsoft,” announced proud Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, who continued, “MLB Network is a complete greenfield approach. They have the opportunity to start fresh with the best equipment and software—and the best application to manage their broadcasting assets. The MLB Network team was very impressed with the asset management and service workflow functionality, and was pleasantly surprised to see the powerful purchasing, receiving, and financial capabilities of VimBiz. MLB Network has the opportunity to set things up optimally from the beginning, and we’re very happy to be a part of this very visible endeavor.”
COGECO is a diversified telecommunications company offering services such as cable television, high-speed Internet, and digital telephony to millions of customers in Ontario, Québec, and Portugal. COGECO has selected VimBiz to manage the company’s mission-critical distribution assets, as well as associated Preventative Maintenance and service workflows.
“COGECO is primarily involved with the distribution side of the broadcasting business. They represent yet another example of the power of VimBiz to accommodate the diverse workflows in this industry,” noted Joel DeWolfe, Marketing Director at Vimsoft. “Production, post-production, radio, TV, film, rentals, mobile trucks, NOCs, transmission—VimBiz makes EAM and engineering workflows more efficient for organizations of all types that fall under the broadcasting umbrella,” said DeWolfe.
Dome Productions is one of North America’s leading production facilities providers, offering a fleet of HD and SD mobile trucks, an extensive range of transmission services, a fully equipped rental studio and edit suite, and turnkey host production services. Dome Productions is the company operating behind the scenes at major live events such as Major League Baseball, NHL hockey, PGA golf, and NBA basketball games, various international summit meetings, and concerts by major artists such as Bon Jovi and Coldplay. As one can imagine, Dome Productions manages a large number of expensive equipment assets, many of them mobile. Efficient asset-management practices are absolutely critical in the time-sensitive environment in which Dome Productions operates. VimBiz was selected as the hands-down winner for managing assets from the budget planning phase, through acquisition, and ultimately to retirement. Flexibility in managing each asset during the middle part—service life—was the key for Dome Productions.
“Flexibility is baked into the VimBiz application suite,” commented Paul Manuel, Vice-President of Vimsoft. Manuel continued, “We proved flexibility when Dome attended a demo and their asset dataset was already loaded in the database being presented. That raised a few eyebrows, in a good way! We’re very proud to have Dome onboard. They are a highly respected team, recognized throughout North America as a professional organization that gets the job done—done right and done on time—for its broadcasting customer base. We couldn’t ask for a better customer to showcase the flexibility of VimBiz.”
The United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service has taken a major step forward in effectively managing broadcasting-related assets by purchasing VimBiz for the American Forces Network (AFN) Broadcast Center. With a large number of assets and a user base that can be redeployed on short notice, AFN needed an extremely powerful asset management suite with a short learning curve and easily managed user permissions and authentication procedures.
“AFN administration immediately saw the workflow benefits VimBiz creates,” observed Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel, “and fell in love with the intuitive GUI and powerful admin functionality. Features such as Windows authentication mean IT can choose whether or not to create an additional set of usernames and passwords for VimBiz users. The level of thought behind the application is one of the things that continue to impress all who see VimBiz in action.”
From their Denver-area digital origination facility and world-class NOC, Technicolor Network Services U.S. develops, supports, and delivers cable network products and services to globally recognized customers such as NBC Universal. For managing mission-critical assets and related service workflows, VimBiz was already an indispensible suite of tools at Technicolor Network Services U.S., but the company wanted to tie in purchasing/receiving functions and on-air discrepancy reporting with their powerful asset-management capabilities. The solution: a few more VimBiz licenses. VimBiz has extremely powerful order-management functionalities—from stockroom auto-reordering to Purchase Order authorization to low-cost-supplier defaults to receiving and internal delivery. And Vimsoft Live makes requesting and ordering previously non-stock items a breeze. In addition to new power-users in purchasing/receiving, Technicolor Network Services U.S. set up new users to take full advantage of the VimBiz Discrepancies module. Now Discrepancy Reporting personnel can manage details of each discrepancy, including timecodes, durations, program information, and assets involved. Discrepancy managers can get a number of snapshot reports containing critical discrepancy information.
“Technicolor Network Services U.S. is a cherished Vimsoft customer,” noted Joel DeWolfe, Vimsoft Marketing Director. DeWolfe added, “Their users dive deep into the functionality of their assigned permission level. Their people help define efficient broadcast engineering workflow. Technicolor Network Services U.S. drives us to excel. They’re as much a partner as they are a customer.”
Canada’s largest radio broadcaster has chosen VimBiz to manage physical and software assets. Astral Media Radio is especially strong in “la belle province,” where each week one out of every two Québecers tunes in to an Astral radio station. Appropriately, VimBiz implementation will commence in Montréal.
“Astral Media Radio solidifies VimBiz as must-have engineering workflow software in the radio broadcasting sector,” pronounced Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “VimBiz has wide applicability across the broadcasting and media production spectrum—television, radio, post-production, transmission, mobile operations, and much more. Validation of this by a company as well known and well respected as Astral Media Radio is very satisfying, indeed,” continued Manuel.
With a proven track record at CBC Television, VimBiz was an obvious choice to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and organize engineering workflows at CBC Radio. To fast-track ROI, CBC Radio took advantage of a few Vimsoft services, including pre-cleaning and importation of existing asset data. In addition, the customer kickstarted service shop efficiency by having Vimsoft provide onsite professional training services.
“We are very pleased with this significant expansion of the relationship between the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Vimsoft,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “The CBC has exhibited great confidence in Vimsoft. Coming from the world’s largest broadcasting company, this sort of support is an important indicator of Vimsoft’s capabilities in addressing the most complex workflows in the broadcasting industry,” added DeWolfe.
Operating in more than a dozen Spanish-speaking countries, Albavisión is the largest television and radio broadcasting network in Latin America. Having met Vimsoft at NAB 2008, Albavisión executives quickly recognized the power of the VimBiz Equipment Asset Management application suite, and were especially interested in the flexibility of the VimDev framework underlying the application.
“The multilingual capabilities of VimBiz were attractive to Albavisión,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel, “but what really impressed management was the ability to tailor the software to accommodate important company financial variables and structures.”
Proving commitment to Vimsoft technology, Albavisión commissioned a VimBiz pilot and customization project less than 1 month after the NAB Show.
Thank you to both new and annual visitors to the Vimsoft booth at this year’s NAB Show. Vimsoft will continue its commitment to product development of VimBiz. New and existing customers will benefit from additional modules already under development.
Thanks again to all who made NAB 2008 such a huge success for Vimsoft. Thanks for the intense interest of new prospects. Thanks for the sincere commitment of our reseller partners. And thanks for the infectious enthusiasm of Vimsoft’s raving-fan customers. It’s going to be a great year.
In response to customer demand for VimBiz
to come pre-loaded with the most common broadcasting products, Vimsoft has gone
a significant step further—Vimsoft Live.
Instead of a static pre-loaded product list, VimBiz
users now have seamless live access to a continuously evolving product database
hosted and maintained at Vimsoft headquarters. A single click imports rich product
information to the user’s local VimBiz database.
Vimsoft Live allows the
VimBiz user to easily find rich product information that corresponds
to assets the user has in their company inventory. It also enables users to identify
the best product or part for an upcoming project, click to add the item to the local
database, and then drag-and-drop it into the Product Request Shopping Cart to create
a new PO in VimBiz.
"Vimsoft Live capabilities are a powerful
complement to what is already the broadcasting industry’s most powerful Equipment
Asset Management solution, VimBiz,” beams
Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “The user experience is so slick it is largely imperceptible
what is going on behind the scenes, underscoring the beauty of the technology,”
adds the visionary executive. “For our industry Vimsoft
Live is a revolution in managing broadcasting assets.”

using the power and flexibility of VimBiz.
“Each Cirque du Soleil show requires a solid 3 years of preparation before ever
appearing before a live audience,” explained Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel.
“The training phase alone involves many equipment assets. Lighting could be adjusted
hundreds of times before a public debut,” noted Manuel. The proud VP added, “Cirque
du Soleil is another great example of how VimBiz addresses the diversity within
the media and entertainment industry. We are honored to count among our satisfied

Vimsoft recently flexed its prodigious software development muscles at the inaugural
Think NB showcase of New Brunswick information and communication technology (ICT)
companies. Planned as an annual event, Think NB has been designed to profile and
promote NB ICT companies to government departments and agencies, academia, and industry.
Vimsoft QA Administrator Marc Gallant noted, “We have an export mentality in this
part of the world, and that’s a very good thing, but this event demonstrated the
importance of networking with fellow ICT companies closer to home. We generated
a lot of buzz with Vimsoft’s VimDev proprietary development framework upon which
the best-in-class VimBiz application is built.” Gallant added, “VimDev blew a few
minds…and given the high caliber of software companies, government folks, and academics
in attendance, we’re quite proud of that.”
The government of the Province of New Brunswick has bestowed upon Vimsoft a prestigious
award for excellence in innovation. Recognizing the innovative and commercially
successful VimBiz application, Vimsoft’s proprietary VIMDEV development framework,
and uncharted Web R&D work, the Enterprise Greater Moncton economic development
agency nominated the information management powerhouse for the award.
“We work long hours pushing the edges of available technology and often inventing
our own,” noted proud Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel. “Leading the edge of software
technology has its own rewards when it is your passion,” continued Manuel, “but
it is very gratifying to be recognized among peers in the business community and
by our supporters in government.”

Recognition Award from the
Honourable Greg Byrne, Q.C., Minister of Business New Brunswick.
Customers, distributors, and other interested parties are invited to join Vimsoft
at the Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE) 2007 Convention at the
Fantasyland Hotel at the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta. Vimsoft will be
displaying the innovative VimBiz application suite in the BSE booth on October 15
and October 16, and Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe is scheduled to make a presentation
at 3:15pm on October 16 in the Beaujolais Room at the Fantasyland Hotel.
“WABE 2007 helps Vimsoft stay current through networking and technical paper presentations,”
noted DeWolfe, “and the exhibit floor and hospitality events help us demonstrate
how VimBiz can address several asset management and service workflow challenges
that face radio, television, and transmission engineers.”
Astral Media, one of Canada’s largest media companies, has chosen to implement the VimBiz Equipment Asset Management suite to help make television operations more efficient. Primary needs included streamlined data ingest and accommodation of various engineering service workflows.
Mitch Manuel, President of Vimsoft, commented, “Our product-centric relational database architecture means very efficient data handling. You could own thousands of units of a particular model, but you would only need to add or edit product information once.” Manuel continued, “This was a key benefit identified by Astral Media, as was the ability to handle service workflows that ranged from simple cable-fab requests to more complex asset-based Service Requests that involved departmental charge-backs and multiple service shop employees.”
Demonstrating the company’s commitment to the broadcasting industry, Vimsoft will
attend and present at the Central Canada Broadcast Engineers (CCBE) 2007 Convention
in Barrie, Ontario this September.
“Broadcast engineers are the internal champions of our product,” stated Vimsoft
Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe. “CCBE 2007 makes a lot of sense for Vimsoft from
a couple of standpoints,” continued DeWolfe, “For one, it provides an opportunity
for us to keep abreast of the challenges facing broadcast engineers, and secondly
it provides an opportunity for Vimsoft to showcase VimBiz to an important target
audience.”
Vimsoft’s Joel DeWolfe is scheduled to speak at 10:15am on Sunday, September 16
in the Alpine Room at the Horseshoe Resort in Barrie, Ontario.
PSSI Global Services provides a fantastic example of the flexibility of Vimsoft’s
VimBiz application. With corporate offices in Las Vegas and California, PSSI is
a full-service production and satellite transmission company that specializes in
the coordination, production, and transmission of domestic and international live
event programming. With VimBiz PSSI can much more effectively manage the company’s
full range of fixed, mobile, and international fly-away satellite systems used to
provide live video, audio, IP, and data services worldwide.
“PSSI operates one of the largest fleets of mobile production and satellite uplink
trucks in the US, plus they cover news, sports, entertainment, corporate, government,
military, and other types of events all over the world,” explained Vimsoft Marketing
Director Joel DeWolfe. “From space shuttle launches to the MLB World Series to the
Academy Awards, PSSI is the company operating behind the scenes to bring such events
to global audiences. The inherently mobile nature of many PSSI assets meant they
needed an EAM system that had built-in flexibility and scalability. Only VimBiz
could fit the diverse needs of PSSI Global Services,” continued DeWolfe.
Officials at the United States Department of Defense have purchased VimBiz to manage
broadcasting assets and related service workflows. Several agencies within the DoD
are involved with the implementation, but the primary user base comes from The Pentagon
Channel—broadcasters of military news and information targeted toward members of
the US Armed Forces.
“This is a significant feather in the Vimsoft corporate cap,” stated Vimsoft President
Mitch Manuel. “We gain a prestigious customer and the US DoD gains the absolute
best tool on the planet for their needs, which include integration with cutting-edge
RFID technology. US military officials did their homework, and once they saw VimBiz
the purchase decision was quickly made,” added Manuel.
Decisive Analytics Corporation (DAC) is a system engineering company that provides
optimization solutions, systems analysis, and other products and services to a wide
array of broadcasting and non-broadcasting customers. DAC has a long history with
the US Department of Defense and other government agencies, as well as with commercial
businesses. With VimBiz, DAC now has a powerful tool to manage its physical and
software assets, as well as the ability to manage projects and assets for DAC customers.
“DAC demonstrates the powerful flexibility of VimBiz as an information management
tool,” noted Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “VimBiz has powerful service workflow
capabilities,” added Manuel, “but systems integrators and system engineering companies
like DAC also recognize the benefits of managing projects for their own customers
using this powerful application. DAC provides a great example of why the ‘V-I-M’
in Vimsoft stands for ‘Versatile Information Management.’”
At Vimsoft there is a strongly held belief that customer prospects should have a
high degree of transparency regarding the software they are considering buying.
This is the primary reason for the “try-before-you-buy” VimBiz free download, which
may very well represent the world’s most powerful self-installing database-driven
free application. The company also maintains a firm commitment to outstanding customer
support. A series of new downloadable videos addresses both the transparency and
support goals of Vimsoft.
“An ever-expanding line of videos allows customers and prospects to quickly learn
how to perform common tasks such as adding assets, coordinating service requests,
and ordering parts,” noted Vimsoft training specialist Brian Brown, “and the best
part is these videos are structured in a way so the viewer can digest the content
in manageable chunks. They are a great complement to the VimBiz Help Files and a
testament to Vimsoft’s dedication to customer support.”
Vimsoft has completed the US Government Central Contractor Registration procedure
to become an eligible supplier to federal government departments and agencies in
the United States. Part of the registration process involved securing a NATO commercial
code, necessary for doing business with any department under the US Department of
Defense umbrella.
For additional information about Vimsoft’s various registrations and classifications,

Management suite to streamline its engineering workflows.
“We are very proud to have Sparrowhawk Broadcast Services as a customer…it is a
company with extensive global reach,” commented Joel DeWolfe, Marketing Director
at Vimsoft. DeWolfe added, “They have a presence in 116 countries in 26 languages
on 5 continents. They are the broadcast services team behind the Colorado Avalanche
and Denver Nuggets, and they also deliver the Hallmark Channel around the world.
Sparrowhawk Broadcast Services helps Vimsoft show the range of broadcasting-related
operations that VimBiz is applicable to—it is a truly diverse segment.”
The National Research Council of Canada delivers its Industrial Research Assistance
Program through a nationwide team of business- and technology-savvy scientists and
engineers called Industrial Technology Advisors (ITAs). Recognizing proprietary
development advantages, powerful existing tools, and unmatched platform and application
flexibility, the NRC chose Vimsoft over a dozen other vendors to supply a reporting
and project management suite for its ITAs. The database-driven application developed
by Vimsoft will be accessible via thick-client (rich) as well as thin-client (Web)
interfaces, a rare combination and Vimsoft specialty appropriate for the needs and
reputation of ITAs.
“NRC ITAs are the recognized technology experts within government and the face of
innovation between government and industry,” noted Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel,
“so this contract represents an endorsement Vimsoft hopes to leverage for years
to come.”
As part of its commitment to customer service and quality assurance, Vimsoft has
hired experienced software developer and training specialist Brian Brown. With a
well-rounded programming background and rich customer-facing experience, Brian is
a valuable asset to the Vimsoft team.
Lead Software Developer Luc Gallant noted, “Solid Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and
database development capabilities combined with great people skills is a powerful
combination. Brian has these skills in spades,” continued Gallant, “and is a welcome
addition to the team and a key person behind the Vimsoft customer experience.”
Corus Entertainment, one of Canada’s most successful integrated media and entertainment
companies, has chosen to implement VimBiz to manage equipment and software assets
at its Toronto-based specialty television operations and digital post-production
facility.
“Corus multimedia entertainment brands are household names,” explained proud Vimsoft
Vice-President Paul Manuel. “Assets such as YTV, Treehouse, W Network, CMT, SCREAM,
Discovery Kids, and Movie Central are all part of the Corus specialty television
family. We’re extremely proud to have this great Canadian company in the Vimsoft
customer portfolio,” added Manuel.
With new customers, new partners, expanding roles with existing clients, and an
increasing headcount, the time has come for Vimsoft to expand into new office space.
The move is convenient for staff, clients, and partners alike, since the Vimsoft
team exercised an option to expand into a large space adjacent to the existing suite,
which will continue to be part of Vimsoft’s floorplan.
“We’ve now got more flexible space for our growing development team and we can more
comfortably accommodate on-site demonstrations and meetings with our investors,
prospects, customers, and partners,” noted Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe.
“Everyone also appreciates the fact that this move only added ‘Suite 202’ to our
existing Suite 204 address,” added DeWolfe.
When in the Moncton area, visit Vimsoft at 451 Paul Street, Dieppe, New Brunswick,
Canada, Suite 202-204.
With over 108,000 attendees, the National Association of Broadcasters 2007 show
in Las Vegas once again proved why it is the industry-defining event for any company
involved in broadcasting and media production. Visitors to the Vimsoft booth confirmed
that VimBiz is the best-of-breed Equipment Asset Management solution for broadcasting.
This status was not only noted by customers, but also by prospects exposed to a
VimBiz demonstration and by resellers who have a solid grasp on available technologies.
In addition, response was very positive from systems integration specialists. Systems
integrators see VimBiz as a valuable tool for managing their own clients’ projects,
and as a very attractive offering that could be pre-loaded and sold to these clients.
NAB2007 also provided the opportunity for Vimsoft to flex some of its prodigious
development muscle. Evidence of this included several completely unscripted software
customizations performed during product demonstrations to potential customers. “Implementing
a software change on the fly to accommodate a scenario that a prospect just brought
up really blew people away,” observed Lead Software Developer Luc Gallant. Also
indicating the inherent flexibility of the VimBiz platform, Vimsoft used NAB2007
to showcase a new Web version of the software and ran the application on both Windows
XP and Microsoft’s latest Vista operating system. “New graphical and navigation
features of Vista enhance what is already a very aesthetically pleasing and intuitive
VimBiz user interface,” noted Gallant. Vimsoft technology also enables the VimBiz
application to deploy simultaneously on both rich-client and Web platforms. Gallant
summarized, “The beauty of the Web version is not only that the number of users
is unlimited, it’s that any user on any computer anywhere in the world can access
VimBiz via secure login and enjoy the same rich-like user experience normally available
only in a client-server environment.”
Vimsoft will further expand its broadcasting presence with a professionally designed
display booth at the National Association of Broadcasters 2007 trade show in Las
Vegas April 16-19. NAB2007 will feature over 68 football fields of exhibitors and
attract well over 105,000 attendees from around the globe.
Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel commented, “2006 was our first year at NAB and it
was a breakthrough year for the VimBiz product suite. NAB will continue to play
an important role in our marketing efforts.
Vimsoft invites all customers, resellers, and potential clients to stop by booth
#C10349 in the Central Hall to visit the Vimsoft team, ask questions, and see a
VimBiz demonstration.
“Lots of functionality will be displayed at the booth this year…things like enhanced
barcode scanning capabilities and e-mail and text message notification for important
status changes,” noted Manuel. “Nobody else combines the versatility, scalability,
reporting, and cost-effectiveness of VimBiz,” beamed Manuel. “It sets the standard
for Equipment Asset Management in the broadcasting and media production industry.”
Montréal-based MusiquePlus/MusiMax has purchased Vimsoft’s Equipment Asset Management
suite, VimBiz. MusiquePlus wanted a powerful asset tool and something to streamline
service requests and preventative maintenance processes. The company also desired
the capability for its employees to work in either French or English. The obvious
answer was VimBiz and the purchase decision was made even easier when the relatively
low licensing cost of the software was factored in. Now MusiquePlus has a best-of-breed
Equipment Asset Management suite with the most compelling value proposition in the
broadcasting industry.
MONCTON – Vimsoft Inc., a leading provider of asset management software solutions
for the broadcasting industry, announced today that it has secured venture capital

Reaching another milestone in the company’s 2007-2009 business plan, Vimsoft has
added an experienced Quality Assurance Administrator to the team. Marc Gallant joined
Vimsoft in February 2007, bringing with him a rich background of software QA management
at customer sites in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Mr. Gallant will
lead quality assurance efforts for the VimBiz Equipment Asset Management suite,
providing customers with a reliable and user-friendly software experience.
Vimsoft has unveiled its impressive new 11-minute “Introduction to VimBiz” video
and posted it in the company’s online video library. The quick-tempo video provides
a great overview of this extremely capable application suite and indicates Vimsoft’s
dedication to the broadcasting sector.
“The target audience for the new video is quite wide within broadcasting organizations.
It is relevant to engineering, purchasing, finance, upper management, rental operations,
and other functional areas,” commented Vimsoft Marketing Director Joel DeWolfe.
Development Team Leader and “star” of the video Brian Brown also noted, “It is not
a highly technical piece. It is not a how-to video. It is a concise 11-minute expression
of what VimBiz can do for any media company of any size.”

Vimsoft was one of only five Canadian companies selected to be featured at a winter
2007 six-city European mission organized by a network of Canadian Trade Commissioners.
Focused on the latest broadcasting technologies such as Internet Protocol television
(IPTV), the mission encompassed presentations and matchmaking sessions in Stockholm,
Helsinki, Oslo, Copenhagen, Brussels, and Munich. Vimsoft’s 2007-2009 marketing
plan calls for penetration into Europe, and this mission provided a valuable opportunity
to develop contacts at broadcasting, media production, and reseller companies throughout
the region.
Concrete had yet to be poured when investors behind a greenfield eastern Canadian cold storage facility contacted Vimsoft for information management help. Warehousing veteran Charles Robichaud would be the General Manager for the state-of-the-art public freezer on New Brunswick’s Atlantic coast. Robichaud and his team were aiming to open the doors of Maritime Cold Storage (MCS) in the spring of 2008. Combining his years of experience in the industry with research on available warehouse management solutions left Charles with the intense feeling that there must be a better way.
“It was quite apparent to MCS that existing warehouse management solutions were limited in functionality yet prohibitively expensive,” recalled Vimsoft Vice-President Paul Manuel. “Traditional systems used older technology and were very prone to the introduction and repetition of human errors,” continued Manuel.
Without VimBiz, warehousing facilities must rely on separate systems to handle warehouse traffic, invoicing, accounting, and payroll. This involves further expense and errors. A key VimBiz advantage for warehousing is that the system automatically generates invoices based on warehouse activities. For MCS this was a revelation, and led to Vimsoft providing a complete turnkey solution that included barcode scanners, forklift computers, and even desktop PCs, e-mail set-up, and IT support. Every arrival, movement, withdrawal, invoice, purchase order, and employee paycheck is managed through VimBiz. Vimsoft provided a complete software, network, and hardware solution for MCS. The only software applications in the entire organization are VimBiz and the Microsoft Office suite.
Charles Robichaud has become a strong advocate for Vimsoft technology, support, and the VimBiz suite. “VimBiz is a very graphical, user-friendly warehousing software solution that is essential to the operation and success of our Public Refrigerated Warehouse,” commented Robichaud, adding, “Feedback from our customers has been excellent in regards to the accurate information we are providing.”
In January 2007 Vimsoft President Mitch Manuel attended a trade mission to Chicago
organized by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The mission provided
an opportunity to see presentations by experts offering advice on how to do business
in Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois. There were also matchmaking sessions
that provided Vimsoft exposure to some small and large broadcasting companies and
a Chicago university with a specialized broadcasting training program. The mission
also provided an ideal opportunity to drop in on Chicago-based HARPO Productions,
a satisfied Vimsoft customer since July 2006.
Displaying dedication to the broadcasting and media production industry, Vimsoft
secured booth space and a speaking engagement at the finely focused All Access 2007
show at Tour Tech East’s facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Featuring a relatively
small but influential number of broadcasting equipment suppliers and resellers,
All Access provides a fantastic opportunity to network with industry players and
demonstrate Vimsoft’s newest VimBiz features. The annual show also happens to take
place in New Brunswick-based Vimsoft’s backyard.
Executing on the 2007-2009 business plan, Vimsoft management has hired a new Marketing
Director to oversee all marketing operations over the next three years and beyond.
Joel DeWolfe has joined the Vimsoft team in this capacity, bringing with him an
impressive academic background and extensive marketing and project management experience.
Graduating 1st-in-class from Boston’s Northeastern University, Mr. DeWolfe worked
in mobile communications technology and managed bricks-and-mortar and Web-based
business operations in New England and Atlantic Canada. The 2007-2009 business plan
calls for increased broadcasting-market penetration of the VimBiz Equipment Asset
Management suite throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.
A Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) conference in Montréal
in fall 2006 provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the power and versatility
of VimBiz, Vimsoft’s broadcasting-focused Equipment Asset Management and Maintenance
software suite. Invited by a large equipment reseller interested in adding VimBiz
to the portfolio of offerings, Vimsoft managers made lasting impressions on regional
and international multimedia production companies and broadcasters.
After extensive due diligence, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has
invested in Vimsoft under the federal government department’s Industrial Research
Assistance Program (IRAP). IRAP funding is earmarked for extremely innovative research
and development work with a high probability of commercialization benefits. The
NRC investigated Vimsoft’s existing technology and the company’s proposal to expand
its database framework to a Web-based environment with a very rich-form user experience.
Satisfied with the technical aspects of the proposal, the NRC also positively evaluated
the commercialization potential of the proposed R&D work. Vimsoft has an existing
customer base willing to pay to use applications developed as a result of the work
done in the proposed project, and several other potential customers have made inquiries
about capabilities that would be addressed through the project.
The one-year IRAP funding for this project will cover 75% of Vimsoft’s R&D costs
to bring the proposed development framework technology to a commercially viable
state.
The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) has demonstrated the federal government’s
support of Vimsoft’s marketing plan for the 2007-2009 period. Under an ACOA Business
Development Program (BDP) provisionally repayable loan structure, Vimsoft can claim
export marketing expenses incurred in the execution of the company’s 3-year marketing
plan. Terms of the contract cover the period of July 28, 2006 to September 30, 2007,
and Vimsoft plans call for further penetration of the broadcasting and media production
markets in the United States and Europe during that timeframe. Eligible expenses
will be covered up to 75% and repayment of the Agency’s contribution is based on
a percentage of sales generated in export markets.
HARPO Productions, the Chicago-based multimedia production company owned by entertainment
magnate Oprah Winfrey, has selected Vimsoft’s powerful VimBiz application to manage
valuable equipment and software assets. A HARPO representative witnessed a VimBiz
demonstration at the monstrous 2006 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show
in Las Vegas and immediately knew this was the solution the company needed. The
Chicago-based company has a number of high-end equipment assets and editing software
suites and recognized the value of efficiently managing and servicing these mission-critical
assets. With VimBiz, asset information is at the fingertips of managers and maintenance
engineers, providing valuable information management benefits, lower asset-ownership
costs, and fewer surprises.
The numbers are staggering—over 1,500 exhibitors and in excess of 105,000 attendees.
This is the annual National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) extravaganza in Las
Vegas—mecca for all in the broadcasting and media production world. The status of
NAB makes it a must on the Vimsoft event calendar, and NAB2006 became the forum
for the introduction of the VimBiz Equipment Asset Management suite. Response was
very enthusiastic, and Vimsoft representatives and booth visitors alike confirmed
that NAB supports what other industry research indicates—there is no scalable broadcasting-focused
Equipment Asset Management suite available, other than VimBiz.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has performed extensive research on
how best to manage its many thousands of equipment and software assets in order
to increase efficiency and lower costs. Non-scalable solutions were not an option
for an organization as large and complex as the CBC. Large, horizontally focused
software vendors could only promise to try to build something that would meet CBC
requirements…at a cost of several million dollars. The solution for the CBC was
VimBiz by Vimsoft. As a demonstration of the world’s largest broadcasting company’s
confidence in VimBiz, the software suite was purchased and implemented in the state-of-the
art Toronto Broadcasting Centre in early 2006. Housing over 40,000 equipment assets,
the TBC is a complex microcosm of the CBC culture. As of spring 2007, VimBiz has
performed flawlessly in this environment for over one year.
